In male rats bilateral lesions of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus which
cause significant increase in total body weight result in significant reduction in
thyroid secretion rate. It is suggested that this reduction in thyroid secretion rate,
along with growth hormone deficiency and hyperinsulinemia, may explain the increase
in body fat which has been reported to occur in the hypothalamic obese rat.
